  • 2013 Coast Guard Cup -- First Place The Third Annual Coast Guard Foundation Cup was an enriching race.  I would highly encourage any racers to have a run.  It is great prep work for Annapolis to Newport or Annapolis to Bermuda.  This was my second Coast Guard Cup.  It benefits the Coast Guard Foundation which support Coasties who protect our waterways and boarders.  We had Nate, Marihelen, Jose, Trevor, Joey, Caleb, Brian and Bobby on for the race.  We had a lot of strategy discussions during the week leading up to the cup.  Winds on the bay are a fickle thing.  The weather forecast was changing daily which would have a direct impact to the strategy.  Below are some examples of the discussions the team had before ...

  • Poco Loves Magazines! Our first full racing season came and went.  The season could be described as bittersweet.  We did things.  We went places.  We went in circles on a boat.  None of this is worth anything if we don't feel like the world is listening.  Sailing is important people!  The entire season went by without our requested sponsorship by Julio's Thongs, no mention on Fox News, NY Times, or NBC.  No calls from the America's Cup folks desperate for a full replacement crew.  I could go on but the pain is too near.  Perhaps we are destined to be a just a small local sailing team..  Poco did have a few mentions in local sailing publications.  Poco was very ...

  • Dockage in Annapolis The cheapest dockage in Annapolis, MD is Watergate Village Apartments.  The rates tend to be around $8.30 per foot per month.  Or $316/month for an example 36' racing boat.  Or $180/month for an example 25' racing boat.  Payable in six or twelve month increments.  It is located in Back Creek and has great depth at the end of the docks.  At low tide the end of the dock is 9' and there are no shoals leaving Back Creek.  http://watergatevillage.com/siteplan.htmlThey offer no professional marina services.  If those are needed then I'd recommend Jabin$ directly across the creek.  There is no official security personnel, however, being around 600 apartments gives a wonderful neighborhood ...

  • Bermuda Bound - 75 Days There's so much to do to get ready for Bermuda.  I wanted to share some of the crew communications and ideas with  other people doing the race.  Hi Folks, How are you? Welcome to the Poco Bermuda Ocean Race Crew!  It's a tremendous investment in time and resource.  Thanks for making the commitment.  I'm excited for every minute.  This is going to be a wild ride.  A Beneteau 36.7 won the Newport to Bermuda in 2006.  I hope my excitement is contagious.  I hope this race will help fulfill some of your sailing goals.  Doing this race on Poco is one of my bucket list items.  Earning a podium finish in this race is another.  It ...

  • AYC Frostbite Series I Results Poco's first series racing was in the AYC Frostbite Series.  The name of the series depicts bitter cold conditions.  I get chilled just thinking about chipping an inch of ice of the deck before racing.  We didn't see those conditions at all!  We average temperatures of 50 degrees and winds averaging from the south east at 6-12 knots.  That is perfect for sailing around Annapolis.    Crawl, Walk, Sail? The series rules allows us a very comfortable entrance into the Annapolis racing scene.  Boats are only allowed a headsail and main.  No spinnakers, code zeros, staysails or large boxer briefs tacked to the topper.  That means easy sail handling which allows the knucklehead at the wheel to focus ...

  • It's Not Easy Being Green Sailors often congratulate themselves about how eco minded sailing is.  After all, sailboats take advantage of wind as a free power source.  They use few resources like diesel and electricity.  They are very quiet without a motor to move them places.   What a stark contrast to those dreadful power boaters..  The pride sailors take in themselves and their chosen hobby shines through whenever a power boat zooms by burning a dozen gallons per hour of fuel.  Surely they are the wasteful ones! Why are sailboats always carrying or dropping all sorts of trash, pumping out oil, waste, aluminum cans..  Let's solve some wasteful problems by identifying opportunities to be stewards of our precious sailing areas as well as the ...
